Splendiferous

The Wednesday morning farmer's market is great for mid-week restocking, but it's nothing compared to the lush piles of produce available on Saturdays. I stopped by this morning to pick up the usual stuff (though August's bounty should hardly be deemed 'usual'). What I got instead was Mother Nature putting on a show. Only two days ago I read about beets like these, and there they were, looking like purple tree trunks with their distinctive rings.
Normally I cube beets. They are easier to eat that way, and no matter how I love the color, I don't want beet splotches on all my clothes. But tonight I sliced the beets. With their concentric circles, they were begging for it. Like Michaelangelo claiming his chisel only revealed the figure already lying in the stone, my knife and I did the same with the beets. I was a kitchen Michaelangelo for the evening.

Vegetables are gorgeous, and no one quilts them like Ruth McDowell. I bought this book before I learned to quilt, just to look at her work. You can search the book at amazon. It's out of print, but used copies are available.

Those beets are incredible!! I think we'll head down to the farmer's market on Saturday as I crave a nice beet salad after seeing your post!

I don't like to eat beets but these sure are pretty to look at! Art can be found anywhere you look, even in food!

I was thinking how beautiful fabric would be in that color with a print just like that. Not to mention that they look good enough to eat! LOL

I don't care for the flavor of beets so I never would have seen this type if you hadn't shown it.

Since beet juice stains so much, would it dye fabric?

I had the same thought as Wanda: could you dye fabric with beet juice??

Those rings are amazing. I had no idea beets grew that big!

I love beets of all colors -- have you tried roasting them? They're also pretty easy to grow, and I just picked the last of mine. And -- that's a great book! My sister bought it for me when I had just started quilting, and then I took a class at a LQS to learn the technique. I think I posted photos of some of my veggies on my blog a while back...

Gorgeous beets! I tried growing some kind of beets like that one year. Only got a few but they were fun. I'd probably better stick to buying beets or quilting them. ;-)
